You have several PDFs that need to become one file. Maybe a set of invoices, chapters of a report, or signed pages that belong together. Merging them should not require paid software or a clunky desktop install.
This guide shows how to merge PDFs using PainlessPDF, a free browser-based tool with no account and no watermarks.
When you might need to merge PDFs
- Combining scanned pages into a single document
- Joining a cover letter and resume into one file
- Merging monthly reports into a quarterly summary
- Assembling a contract from separately signed sections
- Packaging multiple receipts for an expense report
How to merge PDF files
1. Open the merge tool
Go to PainlessPDF Merge. You will see a drag-and-drop area where you can add your files.
2. Add your PDF files
Drag multiple PDF files onto the drop area, or click to browse and select them. All your files appear as preview cards in a dialog.
3. Reorder your files
Drag the file cards left or right to set the order you want. The merged PDF will follow this order, first file first. You can also remove any file by clicking the X on its card, or add more files with the Add file button.
4. Merge
Click Merge Files. The PDFs are combined into one document and loaded into the editor where you can review the result.
5. Download
Click Download in the top-right corner. Your merged PDF is ready.
Tips
- Check the page count badge on each card to make sure you picked the right files.
- Preview before downloading. After merging, scroll through the document in the editor to verify the page order.
- Make edits if needed. Since the merged file opens in the editor, you can add text, images, or annotations before downloading.
File size limits
Each file can be up to 50 MB, with a combined total of 150 MB. That covers most use cases, from scanned documents to image-heavy reports.
Privacy
Your files are sent to our servers over a secure, encrypted (HTTPS) connection, merged, and the combined PDF is returned to you. They are used only for that merge, and the temporary server session is cleared automatically.
PainlessPDF is free, requires no account, and adds no watermarks to your merged document.
